The new album from proto-punk legend Iggy Pop, released in the United States today, was inspired by The Possibility of an Island, a 2005 novel by controversial French writer Michel Houellebecq. Pop has said that the book is about "death, sex, the end of the human race, and some other pretty funny stuff." His favorite character in the novel is a little white dog named Fox, and one of the two songs about dogs on the album, "A Machine for Loving," has lyrics taken directly from the book. Pop was originally asked to provide the soundtrack for a documentary about Houellebecq and the book, but it evolved into this independent solo project.
